S&P cuts Greece’s credit rating
Greece on Wednesday became the first western European economy to have its credit ratings downgraded since the credit crisis blew up in August 2007, because its high levels of public and private debt.
Standard & Poor’s moved swiftly to cut the country’s credit ratings after warning of a possible downgrade only five days ago. The euro fell sharply against the dollar, while the gap between Greek and German bond yields rose to fresh record highs.
Marko Mrsnik, S&P analyst, said: ”The global financial and economic crisis has, in our opinion, exacerbated an underlying loss of competitiveness in the Greek economy.”
Greece’s sovereign credit ratings were downgraded from A, which is five notches below the top triple-A rating, to A-minus.
S&P’s decision follows its recent warnings to Spain, Portugal and Ireland that their credit ratings could be downgraded because of their deteriorating public finances.
Earlier on Wednesday, problems mounted for Greece and other so-called peripheral eurozone economies on reports that Ireland was planning to seek help from the International Monetary Fund.
The report sent bond spreads between Germany and the rest of the eurozone to fresh highs since the launch of the single currency in January 1999.
Credit default swaps – a form of insurance against bond defaults – of the peripheral nations also rose sharply, implying the economies of these countries are increasingly in danger of defaulting.
Bonds and CDS prices of Italy, another peripheral nation, have also been hit, although S&P this week reaffirmed its ratings on the country in spite of its massive public debt of more than 100 per cent of gross domestic product. Italy’s banking and housing sectors are seen as being more stable than the other economies.
Greece, on the other hand, has seen its current account deficit soar above 14 per cent, the highest in the eurozone, while its debt to GDP ratio has risen to 94 per cent – second only to Italy in the eurozone.
With labour costs rising and recent street demonstrations against the government, most analysts view Greece as the weakest economy within the eurozone and the one most likely to hold back recovery.
S&P said the country’s repeated failures to stick to budgetary plans had led to structural weaknesses in fiscal management.
The agency added that it believed the sizeable share of social transfers, public wage bill and interest payments in public expenditure highlighted the need for reform.

Savers not spenders need the tax breaks
THE MOST numerous victims of the economic crisis are not, and will not be, the unemployed, or those who lose their homes. They are savers. The first people to suffer are not reckless borrowers, or greedy bankers, who are mostly being protected, at public expense, from the full consequences of their follies. They are those who committed the stupid mistake of acting responsibly.
If, as expected, Gordon Brown, sorry, the Bank of England, brings interest rates closer to zero this week, it seems very unlikely to boost bank lending, house prices, consumer confidence, or most of the other things it's supposed to do. But it will drop a bomb on millions of savers' living standards.
I should declare an interest. The income from my savings has already more than halved, and is sure to crash further. Luckily, I don't depend on it but for the vast numbers who do, including some of the most vulnerable, the outlook is truly bleak.
Britain's present crisis arose partly because we saved too little, and borrowed too much. Our vulnerability to the crisis is increased by our lack of savings to cushion us through the hard times. Yet the Government's long-standing policy of saver abuse has changed not at all.
If I choose to save, I am taxed twice for the privilege: once when it is earned and again on the interest I receive. With this burden, it is now becoming increasingly hard even to maintain the value of my savings.
One reason savers have been discriminated against is that spending is fashionable and savers are deeply politically unfashionable. Savers haven't sunk everything they've got into overpriced starter homes in key middle-England marginals; savers seldom splurge in designer-outlet malls. Many savers are old and unphotogenic.
Yet the fashion may be changing. In the kind of recession we're entering, it makes sense to retrench. Government policy, however, remains to deny us any trench-digging equipment.
They want us to spend instead but even if that was a way out of economic gloom (and it probably isn't), we don't seem willing to oblige. Spending may (or may not) be in the country's interest but it definitely doesn't feel, for now, as if it's in our interests as individuals.
Mr Brown has, it's now increasingly clear, wasted £12.5 billion on a VAT cut that has failed to pull us back into the shops. VAT, rather than income tax, was chosen for the giveaway precisely because it was believed that we would save the proceeds of an income tax cut. Since we now appear to want to save anyway, it seems perverse of the Government to place further obstacles in our way.
For as well as the VAT cut, it's clear that government policies to free up credit are failing. One thing that could, however, make banks more willing to lend is if they have higher capitalisation and more assets - in other words, more savers. Without them, the cycle of the last 18 months could repeat itself.
There are promises this morning that this year's Budget will help savers. It should include an end to taxing people twice on the same money, and a raising of the tax-free Isa limit, which has failed to keep pace with inflation. It probably won't, though. I'm placing my faith in interest-rate tartery, moving my savings promiscuously to snag the minority of decent rates which are still available.
Savers' treatment by the state has always been inexcusable. Now it is starting to look dangerous.
Doctor Boris for Time Lord
YOU KNOW you're getting old when intergalactic, sci-fi policemen start to look young.
Congratulations to Matt Smith, 26, the latest graduate from Time Lord medical school. A shame, however, that the BBC overlooked an even more convincing candidate for the role: Boris Johnson.
It strikes me that Boris (a child in the Seventies) has based his entire persona on the Tom Baker Doctor Who of that era: the same unruly hair, the same rumpled and jovial exterior concealing the same razor-sharp scientific brain, the same implacable hereditary enemies (surely John Biggs, Labour's deputy leader in the London Assembly, must be a Cyberman?)
To those who object that Boris already has a job, I reply that in fact he has about six, without notable ill effect. If you're already chairing TfL, the MPA, the waste board, the skills board and writing a Daily Telegraph column into the bargain, what's a little light acting on the side?

HIGHLIGHT of the Gordon Brown interview in yesterday's Observer was when the Saviour of the World was asked what action his predecessor, the Middle East peace envoy Tony Blair, was taking to resolve the current conspicuous lack of peace in Gaza. “Tony's on holiday at the moment,” said the PM dismissively. “He issued a statement.” Brown is wrong about many things but how spot-on he is about Blair's total irrelevance to the tragedy now unfolding.

Διαμαντής Ματζούνης, ετών 21
Την ώρα που γράφονται αυτές οι γραμμές, ο Διαμαντής Ματζούνης χαροπαλεύει. Είχε ένα χρόνο στην αστυνομία. Το πιο πιθανό είναι ότι προέρχεται από λαϊκή οικογένεια. Πιο σίγουρο είναι ότι είχε όνειρα: Να τελειώσει τη βάρδια του και να ξεκουραστεί. Να βγει την επομένη για καφέ με τους φίλους του. Να δει το κορίτσι του. Να τηλεφωνήσει στους γονείς του για να τους πει πως είναι καλά…
Βρέθηκε στην εντατική να χαροπαλεύει. Κάποιοι πίστεψαν ότι πυροβολώντας τον θα αλλάξουν την κοινωνία. Θα την κάνουν πιο δίκαιη. Εκαναν πράξη το φριχτό σύνθημα «το αίμα κυλάει, εκδίκηση ζητάει». Γι’ αυτούς που σήκωσαν το καλάσνικοφ δεν ήταν παρά ένας «μπάτσος», ένα «γουρούνι», ένας «δολοφόνος». Αυτό δεν φωνάζει στον πληθυντικό σύμπασα η Πρόοδος; Ετσι δεν χαρακτηρίζονται συλλήβδην οι αστυνομικοί και –το χειρότερο– δεν αντιδρά κανείς;
Τα «γουρούνια» δεν έχουν όνειρα· είναι αδιάφορο αν έχουν και ζωή. Εστω και αν είναι μόλις εικοσιενός ετών. Για «μπάτσους», που είναι αδιάφορο αν πυρποληθούν, δεν μιλάει και η εφημερίδα της ανανεωτικής (τρομάρα μας!) Αριστεράς;
«Ω έλατο, ω έλατο τι ωραία που αρπάζεις (…) / Στο Σύνταγμα, στο Σύνταγμα τι ωραία που αρπάζεις! / Μπάτσους γεμάτο στα κλαδιά / Και διμοιρίες στη σειρά / Ω έλατο, ω έλατο δε θα μου τη γλιτώσεις / Βρε θα σε κάψω μια βραδιά /Κι ας έχει μπάτσους στα κλαδιά» («Αντικάλαντα 2008», «Αυγή» 24/12/2008).
Αυτό δημοσιεύτηκε παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων και ουδείς έφριξε…
Από σήμερα ξεκίνησε το γαϊτανάκι των ακριτομυθιών περί «προβοκάτσιας που θέλει να αμαυρώσει τον δίκαιο αγώνα των μαθητών». Ολοι αντιλαμβάνονται όμως ότι κάποιοι ανεγκέφαλοι πήραν τοις μετρητοίς όλα αυτά που άλλοι ανεγκέφαλοι διακινούν περί «δυναμικής αντίστασης στην αστυνομική τρομοκρατία», περί «βίας στη βία της εξουσίας», περί «μπάτσων», «γουρουνιών» και «δολοφόνων». Κάποιοι πίστεψαν ότι η «βία είναι μαμή της Ιστορίας» και αποφάσισαν να κάνουν καισαρική. Ας μην κρυβόμαστε πίσω από περίτεχνες ανακοινώσεις και μεγάλα λόγια. Υπάρχει ιδεολογικό μερτικό στην ευθύνη γι’ αυτήν την δολοφονική απόπειρα.
Εχουν μια ευκαιρία οι της «Προόδου» να αποδείξουν ότι δεν υποκρίνονται όταν διακηρύσσουν πως είναι ενάντια στη βία. Στα τόσα συλλαλητήρια που έκαναν για τον αδικοχαμένο Αλέξη να κάνουν κι ένα για τον άδικα τραυματισμένο Διαμαντή. Να δείξουν ότι εναντιώνονται καθολικά στη βία, είτε αυτή προέρχεται από περίστροφο αστυνομικού είτε από καλάσνικοφ τρομοκρατών. Να απομονώσουν τους ανεγκέφαλους, να πολεμήσουν το φαινόμενο εν τη γενέσει του. Να φωνάξουν «τρομοκράτες, γουρούνια, δολοφόνοι». Και αυτή τη φορά θα λένε αλήθεια…

ΑΠΟΡΙΑ
Αδαμάντιος Μαντζούνης.
Μήπως ξέρετε ποιος είναι; Σας ενόχλησε ποτέ; σας έκανε ποτέ κακό; Γνωρίζεται ποσα χρήματα έπαιρνε; Γνωρίζατε που γεννηθηκε που μεγάλωσε, τι υποχρεώσεις είχε;
Είναι ο αστυνομικός που πυροβολήθηκε σήμερα τα ξημερώματα σε ενέδρα έξω από το υπουργείο πολιτισμού. Πυροβολήθηκε από ένα καλάσνικωφ, ένα πολυβόλο(!) και του πέταξαν και μια χειροβομβίδα...
Τώρα που ένα παιδί 21 ετών, που έκανε τη δουλειά του, για 700 ευρώ, που δεν έκαψε το αυτοκίνητο κανενός, που δεν άφησε άνεργο κανένα συνάνθρωπό του, που έκανε τη νυχτερινή βάρδια του, που στην ουσία είναι δημόσιος λειτουργός και που στην πραγματικότητα είναι σκληρά εργαζόμενος πολίτης, θα βγει κανένας στο δρόμο να διαδηλώσει για την άνανδρη εκτέλεσή του;
Θα βγει κανένας καθηγητής πανεπιστημίου να καταδικάσει το γεγονός; Θα βγει ο «αδέκαστος» Μάκης και ο «γελοίος» Λάκης να πουν τίποτα;
Θα γίνει καμια πορεία προς τα εξάρχεια όπως γίνονται κάθε μέρα στην Ισραηλινή πρεσβεία;
Άντε, γιατί πολύ το έχουμε παραχέσει. Ασχολούμαστε με χίλια πράγματα, εκτός από την πραγματικότητα που βιώνουμε.
Δυο φορές μέσα στο 2008 οι κλέφτες ήταν έξω από την πόρτα μου. Δυο φορές άκουσα ξένους ψύθηρους έξω από το σπίτι μου και δυο φορές οι άντρες της αστυνομίας έφτασαν σε χρόνο ρεκόρ και κυνήγησαν τους κλέφτες. Δυο φορές οι αστυνομικοί, στις δύο και μισή και τέσσερις παρά τέταρτο, έσωσαν το άβατο της οικίας μου.
Το ίδιο θα έκαναν και ίσως έκαναν και για σας.
Δεν είδα όμως να διαδηλώσετε για τον άδικο τραυματισμό ενός νέου εργαζόμενου αστυνομικού.
Κάποιοι έγραψαν όταν καιγόταν ο αστυνομικός από μολότωφ, ότι μυρίζει μπέηκον. Ντροπή τους. Γιατί να που οδήγησαν όλες αυτές οι «ευαισθησίες» σας.
Σήμερα αυτό το παιδί, αύριο εσείς οι ίδιοι και εμείς. Αφορμή δώσατε με όσα γράφατε τόσον καιρό. Και ιδού τα αποτελέσματα...
(σας είχα γράψει και τότε : Θλίβομαι που ο θάνατος ενός παιδιού, έγινε αφορμή για να δράσουν όσοι ψάχνουν τέτοιες ευκαιρίες για να καταλήσουν θεσμούς, όμως κανείς δεν του είχε δώσει σημασία... να τα αποτελέσματα τώρα)

Δυο φορές άκουσα ξένους ψύθηρους έξω από το σπίτι μου και δυο φορές οι άντρες της αστυνομίας έφτασαν σε χρόνο ρεκόρ και κυνήγησαν τους κλέφτες. Δυο φορές οι αστυνομικοί, στις δύο και μισή και τέσσερις παρά τέταρτο, έσωσαν το άβατο της οικίας μου.
Το ίδιο θα έκαναν και ίσως έκαναν και για σας.
Δεν είδα όμως να διαδηλώσετε για τον άδικο τραυματισμό ενός νέου εργαζόμενου αστυνομικού.
Κάποιοι έγραψαν όταν καιγόταν ο αστυνομικός από μολότωφ, ότι μυρίζει μπέηκον. Ντροπή τους. Γιατί να που οδήγησαν όλες αυτές οι «ευαισθησίες» σας.
Σήμερα αυτό το παιδί, αύριο εσείς οι ίδιοι και εμείς. Αφορμή δώσατε με όσα γράφατε τόσον καιρό. Και ιδού τα αποτελέσματα...
(σας είχα γράψει και τότε : Θλίβομαι που ο θάνατος ενός παιδιού, έγινε αφορμή για να δράσουν όσοι ψάχνουν τέτοιες ευκαιρίες για να καταλήσουν θεσμούς, όμως κανείς δεν του είχε δώσει σημασία... να τα αποτελέσματα τώρα)

Περί κουκουλοφόρων
«Κουκουλοφόρους είχαμε μόνο την περίοδο της κατοχής με τους γνωστούς δωσίλογους που πρόδιδαν τους πατριώτες, στους Γερμανούς.»

Ο λαός δε θεωρεί τιμή του να συναναστρέφεται με κουκουλοφόρους»
